Ocracoke Island evacuations begin ahead of Hurricane Irene

(JOSE LUIS MAGANA/ASSOCIATED PRESS) Visitors to 16-mile-long Ocracoke Island off the coast of North Carolina have been evacuated ahead of Hurricane Irene. Ocracoke island, Hurricane 'Irene' is a serious “threat” to the entire East Coast, highlighted on Wednesday the Federal Emergency Management Agency, while the evacuations began on an island in North Carolina.

Ferries Evacuate Visitors at Ocracoke

HYDE COUNTY, N.C. - Visitors of Ocracoke Island had to evacuate Wednesday, as Irene moves closer to the East.

Normally, you would see Dwight Arnold’s tiki hut selling ice cream and lemonade on the beaches of Ocracoke.

Ferry operators say they have been pretty busy.

"During an emergency we don't charge for the ferry rides. mandatory evacuations for people who are living out in Ocracoke begin on Thursday.
